Porn star killed the naked chick

Porn doesn't kill, except on CSI. But it sure can dull your real world sexual sense. Naomi Wolf of New York Magazine even proposes that it turns some men off the real thing.

The Porn Myth
For most of human history, erotic images have been reflections of, or celebrations of, or substitutes for, real naked women. For the first time in human history, the images’ power and allure have supplanted that of real naked women. Today, real naked women are just bad porn...Click to read full article.

But it's harmless, just for fun, or perhaps even healthy right?
Perhaps not says Time.com

The Porn Factor

The question is, Can even recreational use be unhealthy? A 2003 online study by Texas Christian University found that the more pornography men watch, the more likely they are to describe women in sexualized terms and categorize women in traditional gender roles. Mark Schwartz, director of the Masters and Johnson clinic in St. Louis, Mo., says porn not only causes men to objectify women--seeing them as an assemblage of breasts, legs and buttocks--but also leads to a dependency on visual imagery for arousal. "Men become like computers, unable to be stimulated by the human beings beside them," he says. "The image of a lonely, isolated man masturbating to his computer is the Willy Loman metaphor of our decade."Click for full article.

the frustrations of being Southern

Why, God why is y'all not in predictive text on my Alltel LG Glimmer phone? It's enough to make you want to switch to CellularSouth. I think I just might. That will make the third cell provider I have used in less than one year, after being a loyal Southern Bell/BellSouth/Cingular/AT&T customer since 1995. Is it coincidence that as the company lost its Southern touch in their branding, my service began to decline? I think not. ... READ MORE

Lend me your jobless

Last week, an astonishing 589,000 Americans filed for unemployment. Undoubtedly, these are scary times. And yet, here in south Mississippi, I feel strangely buffered from the squalls of our plummeting market.
Retail sales are certainly slower in the downtown where I am stationed, with luxury items barely moving off the shelves at a snail's pace, if at all. Many service-oriented businesses, on the other hand, are not only holding steady, some are expanding while other bold entrepreneurs seek to hang a shingle for the first time this year.
There are at least half a dozen major industries operating in Jones County and each week I hear of new departments downsized, families shaken. I have no names, no connections.
I am looking for a face, one of these folks who has filed unemployment as a result of the national economic crisis, to share his or her story.
If you or someone you know has lost their job and feels the urge to blog about it, please encourage them to contact me.

In the meantime, we'll hear from a graduate who has yet to find her footing in this tough job market even six months after the cap toss. ... READ MORE
